What is Independent Legal Advice (ILA)?
Before a separation agreement becomes legally binding in Ontario, each party should get independent legal advice from their own lawyer. The lawyer reviews the agreement, explains your rights, and confirms you understand what you're signing. This protects both parties and makes the agreement much harder to challenge later.
